In a high number of fields, thanks to progress made in high performance computing, numerical design and simulation have become decisive elements in industrial competitiveness and in research advances. Following on from the aeronautics, automotive, energy, health, communication and audiovisual sectors, the majority of industrial sectors are now aware how strategically important it is for their development to master these critical technologies.
Our actions, and particularly TERATEC Forums, are playing an important role in raising this awareness. Over 800 people attended the TERATEC Forum 2011, who had come to listen to a very wide panel of managers and specialists corroborate the importance of the subject. Our 2012 Forum will be taking place on June 26 and 27 at the Ecole Polytechnique and will be the opportunity to reflect on numerous subjects.
As you know, the TERATEC Campus is currently under construction and we will have a first phase of 10,000 square meters of offices and laboratories in the spring. Together with the CEA’s Very Large Computing Center, this will lead to the creation of the TERATEC Technopole, unique in France and in Europe, which will physically regroup all the elements of the numerical simulation and design value chain. We invite everyone taking part in this to join us on the Campus. You can do this regardless of the size of the facility envisaged, thanks to a business hotel and incubator which is being set up by the Chamber of Trade and Industry of the Essonne region.
Collaborative research projects are also actively continuing in France, notably with the Systematic competitiveness cluster and the ANR (National Research Agency), as well as in Europe within ITEA2 and the Framework Program of the European Commission. We are enthusiastically working on boosting these actions in the future.
Lastly, TERATEC has just taken part in the announcement of the future HPC European Technological Platform, which groups together all European industrial players and the biggest European research centers concerned to ensure that Europe has the t technical and industrial capacity to master these technologies that are essential for our competitiveness. This is a large-scale operation that will have a major impact on our activities and on those of our members.

Major European suppliers of High Performance Computing (HPC) technologies, ALLINEA, ARM, BULL, CAPS Entreprise, EUROTECH, PARTEC, STMICROELECTRONICS and XYRATEX associated with HPC research centres BSC, CEA, CINECA, Fraunhofer, Forschungszentrum Juelich and LRZ have decided to combine forces to create a European Technology Platform (ETP), building on the previous work of PROSPECT and TERATEC.
The objective of the ETP is to define Europe’s research priorities to develop European technology in all the segments of the HPC solution supply chain. It will strengthen European competitiveness in HPC, a key capability for future research and innovation. The effort will be beneficial to a wide range of social and economic challenges.
The purpose of the TERATEC Campus is to give professionals from the field of numerical simulation and high performance computing a dynamic and welcoming environment at the crossroads of innovation, based on three major areas: system architecture and performance, software development and services provision.

On June 26, the common subject of plenary sessions will be the wealth of uses of supercomputing, with the participation of public figures from the political, economic and academic worlds, leading international industrial users and leading suppliers of these technologies.
On June 27, workshops will reflect on major issues, notably high performance systems, green IT, GPUs, complex systems engineering, data deluge, scientific visualization and bio-health.
During these two days, there will be an exhibition of around sixty booths of the main players in high performance numerical simulation, giving exhibitors the opportunity to present their latest HPC innovations.
If you would like to take part in these days, submit a point for the workshops, book a stand in the exhibition or sponsor the TERATEC 2012 Forum, please contact as soon as possible (Tel. : +33(0)1 69 26 61 76)
TERATEC 2011 Forum, focus on High Performance Computing and Systems Design, reaffirmed the strategic importance of these technologies for developing industrial competitiveness and innovation capacity.
The plenary sessions illustrated the growing importance of HPC in many areas of industry and research and its role in major scientific and technological advances, with the participation of David ROS (Conseil Général de l’Essonne), Rudolf HAGGENMUELLER (ITEA 2), Tadashi WATANABE (RIKEN), Catharine VAN INGEN (MICROSOFT), Daniel ZAMPARINI (PSA PEUGEOT CITROËN), Vincent GARNIER (SNECMA GROUPE SAFRAN), Daniel VANDERHAEGEN (CEA), François BANCILHON (DATA PUBLICA) and Eric JACQUET-LAGREZE (EURODECISION).

In the end, more than 800 decision makers and scientific experts in high performance simulation, from industrial and academic worlds together with public sector organisations and competitiveness clusters, met on the occasion of the sixth edition of the TERATEC Forum.
At TERATEC's General Assembly on July 7, 2011, the idea was born to create a committee for small and medium enterprises within our association. The aim is to gather issues related to the size of our structures to enable fair representation in the joint actions of TERATEC.
One of the first large-scale projects for our Committee will concern the TERATEC Campus. The objective is two-fold: to try to better identify the needs of small and medium companies that could supply the incubator and the business hotel, and to provide support to the different local authorities to make sure this project is managed and coordinated in optimal conditions. It is not only a matter of premises, but also of shared transport, catering and accommodation.
In addition to this important issue, other working groups have already begun: relations with OSEO, relations with SYSTEMATIC, the position of small and medium enterprises in the different platform projects (NUMMINOV, LYNX, Multimedia platform, Bio-health, etc.). Committee-related events are also planned within the framework of the futur “TERATEC Thursdays".
If you would like to contact the small and medium company committee or suggest other avenues for thought, please do not hesitate to send a mail to Pierre BEAL.
Welcome to the small and medium enterprises committee!
