Defense and AI, the challenges of cybersecurity

Defense issues are a strategic priority, and are faced with an increasing number of multi-milieu, multi-field threats (MDO for “Multidomain Operations”). Several challenges arise in this type of environment, including the question of interoperability between classified and unclassified systems, the role of artificial intelligence in traceability and predictive maintenance, but also in accelerating the decision-making loop, and HPC requirements for MDO simulation and optimization. MDO actions require extensive HPC simulations, which are currently the subject of work on a sovereign MSaaS offering at NATO level. The cybersecurity required for this sharing of data and simulation models between nations and industry is a major challenge. AI will play a major role in simulation workflows and processes, as well as for information from intelligent sensors. Embedded and distributed frugal AI with cybersecurity protection will be essential in this context. Recent geopolitical developments and the major investment efforts expected at European level for a sovereign defense Europe make these objectives urgent.
