Pharmaceutical Discovery in the Pre-Exascale Era

In the post-genomic era, computational biology tools are in need to leverage genomics’ successes by enabling “big data” and “big calculations”. We present our strategies to perform biomedical ad biopharmaceutical research on the teraFLOPS Titan supercomputer and the new Pre-Exascale supermachines such as the 40 TeraFLOPS SUMMIT supercomputer coming on line in 2018 at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Big Data strategies on such machines make it possible to apply unprecedented computational power in molecular discovery, performing massive “virtual binding assays” involving millions of drug candidates and thousands of protein structures from many biochemical pathways. This enables modern drug discovery to extend beyond hit discovery and into virtual pre-clinical and clinical trials in the drug discovery process. We will present the strategies needed to enable efficient parallelization and handling of large- to massive- I/O and data operations for the processing of individualized genomes and proteomes.

Biographie : Le Docteur Jerome Baudry est titulaire de la Chaire Professorale Chan de ‘Scholar Éminent” à l’Université de l’Alabama, Huntsville, aux Etats-Unis. Après sa thèse de doctorat au CEA Saclay et à l’Université Pierre et Marie Curie, le docteur Baudry a réalisé et dirigé des recherches biomédicales et pharmaceutiques dans la recherche civile et militaire, dans des établissements académiques et industriels aux Etats-Unis. Il a publié plus de 80 articles scientifiques, est inventeur sur plusieurs brevets, et est co-fondateur de deux compagnies de recherche pharmaceutique où il a également la fonction de Directeur de la Recherche et Développement.
