Players segmentation in football competition for TV: do computer vision and machine learning methods work?
Guillaume VILLETTE, Development manager, DIGITARENA

Abstract : DigitArena is a startup aiming to replace banner around football stadium on TV stream in real time. This supposes quite complex algorithm in computer vision to detect all necessary elements. Beside the problem to locate banners and project images them correctly with right illumination, another problem occurs: the detection of players. When a player is in front of a banner, we must detect him so we do not cut him during the replacement.
Computer vision algorithms such as SIFT, tracking, colour differentiation and so on are unfortunately not sufficient due to the too large number of parameters. For this reason, we explore machine learning options and look how it can help us in our workflow.
In this session, we will present results based on current state-of-the-art deep learning models for people detection and segmentation. We will discuss the challenges related to the ground truth data, adaptation of the model, and how in the end we plan to combine the different domains of computer vision and machine learning.

Biography : Biography Software engineer by formation, Guillaume Villette started his career at IBM as a technical presale in the hardware part. Then he moved in Switzerland in a startup to develop software for banners replacement and graphic insertion in sports competition where he is confronted to complex algorithm in computer vision and machine learning.
