Performance through specialization – or not?
Par Axel Nackaerts, Scientific Director, imec
As silicon technology scaling appears to slow down, most performance and power gains for an optimal algorithm must be achieved by improving the architecture of the machine, its nodes and processors. In this talk, we discuss the motivation and impact of the use of chiplets, the move to packet-based memory interfaces and photonic platforms. It is expected that both physics and economy will push the designs to radically different systems, with a deep impact on future hardware-software codesign, and potentially requiring a re-think of the entire ecosystem.

Biographie : Axel Nackaerts is Scientific Director for System Scaling at imec, Belgium. He obtained a PhD from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium in 2003. He started as a researcher at imec, and moved to NXP Semiconductors in 2007, as System Architect for healthcare products. In 2020, he returned to imec as Program Manager Artificial Intelligence, acting as the bridge between software and hardware AI research. He now leads the activities related to High-Performance Computing and Superconducting Digital technology. His main interests are sustainable computing for large-scale AI, cyber-physical systems, system of systems, and the global convergence towards the metaverse. |
