AI in Aerospace Defense: From Innovation to Qualification

Dassault Aviation has demonstrated AI algorithms in flight on the Rafale. The military aerospace sector places high demands on system robustness, performance, human oversight, responsiveness, and resource-effectiveness. To move from innovation to qualification, the integration of AI technologies with IVVQ (Integration, Verification, Validation, and Qualification) methods must ensure robust AI systems that comply with regulatory requirements and ethical principles of engagement. By combining industrial expertise with sovereign partners, Dassault Aviation is developing collaborative air and multi-domain combat systems based on controlled and supervised AI. |

Biography: Patrick Fabiani has been an Artificial Intelligence (AI) senior expert at Dassault Aviation since 2020, where he has contributed to upstream scientific studies, to the AI roadmaps, and to AI qualification and compliance. His expertise lies in Artificial Intelligence and its applications across all aerospace industry domains. From 2013 to 2020, he acted as head of the Research Directorate and scientific strategy at ISAE-SUPAERO in Toulouse, after having led the Control of Systems and Flight Dynamics department at ONERA since 2005. In 1997-1998, he was a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University’s Robotics Laboratory. His expertise in AI for autonomous aircraft and drones was developed at Stanford, then at ONERA where he established the autonomous drone activities (ReSSAC), and later at ISAE-SUPAERO, before joining Dassault Aviation. He holds an engineering degree from École Polytechnique (X87), a SUPAERO engineering diploma with an AeroAstro MSc (1992), and a PhD in AI from SUPAERO (1996). |
