Natural disasters, satellite data and AI: the case of flood risk management

By Duccio PIOVANI, Head of Research, et Alexander USOLTSEV, Lead Computer Vision Scientist, namR

The floods of 14 and 15 October 2018 in the Aude were intense and devastating. They add to the many disasters that make flood risk the most expensive risk in France. Significant efforts are being made by government and public institutions to improve modelling capabilities and deploy new prevention tools. However, flood risk modelling requires an accurate knowledge of the structure and morphology of the building. With regard to current standards, this study consists of an aggregated, inaccurate and community-wide study. To address this, a variety of massive data processing algorithms are used to aggregate a large number of public sources and data owners to provide address-scale exposure indicators. This granularity at the scale of the whole territory makes it possible to significantly improve the quality of the models carried out.

During this session, technical solutions to quantify the risk and propose the best operational and strategic decisions based on large-scale geospatial data, and artificial intelligence algorithms, will be presented and illustrated by practical cases.
