Aeronautics: Propulsion of the future
Pierre Cottenceau, EVP of Engineering, Research & Technology, Safran Aircraft Engines

Air transportation has exhibited a strong average growth for a long period of time, which gives no sign of slowing down. In the increasingly apparent context of climate change, the actors of air transportation have set the ambitious goal of achieving net zero emissions of carbon dioxide by 2050. CFM International, the joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines, launched in 2021 the technology development program named RISE to offer a new architecture of engines for short/medium range airplanes, the open fan, which targets a 20% reduction of fuel consumption and up to 80% reduction of CO2 emissions thanks to full compatibility with Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). This very innovative engine is a huge technical challenge, which will be met amongst other things by using the most advanced numerical simulations. The presentation will describe the neutrality objective of air transportation, the technical reasoning behind the selection of the open fan as the champion architecture for fuel burn reduction, the technology developments under way as well as the benefits of numerical simulation.

Biography: Pierre Cottenceau joined Safran in 2000 in the landing gear business, where he ended up leading the development of the Airbus A400M landing gear system as chief engineer. After three years spent in the United States in a subsidiary of Safran in charge of autopilot and cockpit display systems for light helicopters and airplanes, he joined Snecma (Safran Aircraft Engines) in 2011 to become the chief engineer of the new CFM LEAP 1B turbofan for the Boeing 737MAX. He then oversaw part of the design offices of the engine maker before being named engineering VP of Safran Nacelles in 2018. Since 2024, he has been the EVP of Engineering, Research & Technology of Safran Aircraft Engines.
