Europe is on its way towards "Hybrid Qomputing"

Organised and moderated by Kristel Michielsen, Jülich Supercomputing Centre, Guillaume Colin de Verdière, International Expert in HPC, CEA, and Jean-Philippe Nominé, HPC Strategic Collaborations Manager, CEA

State of the Art: the promises and limitations of Hybrid Qomputing
By Kristel Michielsen, Jülich Supercomputing Centre

In order to overcome the most difficult computational challenges in various research domains and to provide insights for solving major societal challenges, there is a need for next-generation computers and adapted software for disruptive hardware.

Exascale computers are the next generation of supercomputers. Quantum computing, a new disruptive technology, is emerging as a powerful complement to conventional computer design.  Exascale computers supporting the modular supercomputer architecture allow for a straightforward integration of quantum computing architectures to realize the vision of a holistic future hybrid supercomputer. Such a computer in combination with adapted software enables hybrid simulations involving quantum and neuromorphic devices that open up new possibilities for demanding computing tasks in science and industry.

Biography: Prof. Michielsen received her PhD from the University of Groningen, (the Netherlands) for work on the simulation of strongly correlated electron systems in 1993. Since 2009 she is group leader of the research group Quantum Information Processing at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, Forschungszentrum Jülich (Germany) and is also Professor of Quantum Information Processing at RWTH Aachen University (Germany).
Her current research interests include quantum computation, quantum annealing, emulation of quantum computers and quantum annealers, benchmarking, quantum algorithms and potential use cases, hybrid quantum-classical computation and quantum statistical physics.
