Succeeding with digital transition for French industry
Philippe VARIN, President of France Industrie

Philippe Varin is Vice-President of National Industry Council since 2017, and President of France Industrie since 2018. As such, he oversees coherence between these two institutions with very complementary missions to benefit French industry. Indeed:

• France Industrie is the representative professional organization of industry in France, created by the Cercle de l'Industrie and the Group of Industrial Federations. It brings together 21 Federations across Industries, also members of the MEDEF (National Employers representative body) and Presidents of 41 large private and public companies operating in all industrial sectors. Its mission is twofold: to enhance the fundamental role of French industry for our economy, and to promote and defend any initiative fostering the activity and development of our industry.

• Conseil National de l’Industrie, chaired by France Prime Minister, makes proposals and recommendations to public authorities to improve the competitiveness of industry, strengthen sectors and develop related jobs and skills. It is divided into 18 Strategic Sector Committees around major industrial fields, and also includes the National Council for the Digital Industry.

In both functions, Philippe Varin focuses on the Digital Transformation of companies, and first and foremost that of SMEs and Midcaps. He considers digitalization as a priority for our companies, so that they remain competitive on a global level. He believes that a sector-by-sector approach is essential in order to offer the digital tools adapted to companies and their business in each of the 16 sectors.

Philippe Varin will present the challenges of such digitalization and define expectations of France Industrie and the National Industry Council with regards to suppliers of digital technologies, and more specifically the world of HPC.

Biography : Philippe Varin is a person from the world of business who began his career at Péchiney as a researcher, pursuing within the company that led him to hold several upper level management positions. In 2003, he took over the management of the Corus Steel Group. He became a well-known figure in French industry when he was appointed Director of the PSA Peugeot Citroën Group in 2009; under his leadership, the company will enjoy great success, particularly with the launch of the DS premium car range and the establishment of cooperation with Chinese manufacturers. In 2015, he was appointed Chairman of AREVA's Board of Directors, which was in serious financial difficulties at the time. With Philippe Knoche as Managing Director, he implemented a drastic rescue plan leading to a new organization of the French nuclear industry. Philippe Varin is a graduate Engineer from Ecole Polytechnique and Ecole des Min es de Paris. A keen connoisseur of Southeast Asian industry, he acted for several years as Special Representative of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development for ASEAN.
