Digital and Data Sciences for precision medicine – from projects to reality

Digital histopathology? (R)evolve the study of tissues with digital imaging and AI?

By Nicolas LOMENIE, PhD, Associate Professor. Maître de Conférences Informatique, HDR, Université PARIS DESCARTES and Damien DUBUC, Solution architect HIPE software, ANEO

The rise of digital pathology is falling behind in France while it is undergoing a sustained revolution in the USA, China and the United Kingdom. Anatomo-pathologists have a major role in this digital revolution and are becoming more and more involved. It is therefore becoming important to overcome the lack of a national strategy for anatomo-pathology services to control these tools, which are generally provided by private software solution providers and generally not easy, scalable/flexible. Common needs based on basic "bricks" such as the detection of interest areas in tissue’s images etc. could be shared. The world of histopathology sees the explosion of perspectives for the use of AI around machine learning, deep learnings and other neural networks as an opportunity to become involved in these changes of profession and prepare the pathology of tomorrow. Finally, the arrival of new means of augmented visualization must be integrated into the global reflection on the use of scanners and multiplexes. The increasing complexity of technologies and the material resources required slow down access to professions that are the first to require it.

Our collaboration between Paris Descartes University and ANEO opens up opportunities such as the industrialization of research on a larger scale or even to encourage reflection on the robustness and sustainability of the proposed solutions while maintaining a certain flexibility for research. The era of reinforcement learning is already showing the first symptoms of data validity, harmonization and quality over the long term. All these questions will have to answered to design the tools of tomorrow in favour of pathology services.

Biographie : After a real-time and embedded systems engineering school, Damien joined the team in 2008 to work on performance issues at Peugeot Citroën. After one year working on embedded systems, it is quite naturally that he started training on GPU, Xeon Phi, FPGA, x86 computing challenges.

In 2010, he set up the first hybrid CPU/GPU application for a major French investment bank.

After having worked for several clients such as BNP Paribas, CACIB, SGCIB, Thales, Renault, PSA or Total, he has become a technical leader for the Advanced Computing Technologies group at Aldwin by ANEO and specialized as Solution Architect for industrial computer vision processing.

Damien recently released HIPE (more info here => https://www.aneo.eu/hipe/). A framework designed to facilitate the development of complex algorithm while guaranteeing performance and reliability requirements expected by end users. In 2018, he began a collaboration with Professor Nicolas Loménie of the University of Paris-Descartes to industrialize research and the detection of Cancer in tissues.
