Datarmor: a computing infrastructure for marine science

By Pierre COTTY, Department director of Research Infrastructure and Information Systems, Ifremer

Datarmor is a CPER project that follows several generations of IT infrastructures installed in Ifremer/Brest since the 80’s, dedicated to marine sciences. The SISMER Marine Data Center, historically designated by UNESCO, is part of this community and is now part of the ODATIS Ocean and IR Clusters of the Earth System.

Datarmor’s architecture, developed into “functional clusters” linked by an IB network, is able to meet the broad spectrum of marine science needs, which have seen volumes of marine data explode over the past 10 years.

Beyond technical architecture, governance is based on the field of “marine science”, with priorities arbitrated by integrating scientific and technical criteria. Datarmor is able to host "real-time" data streams (in the sense of oceanography) by linking the automatic collection of data, with automated processing and the provision of the expected data services and datasets.

The presentation will describe the context of the “Marine Data Center” that has been housed in Ifremer for more than 40 years. The governance of the whole will be discussed, based on the priorities of the marine field.
