Digital Twins: from "concept" to industrial implementation
Animated by Laurent ANNE, DISTENE

The Digital Twin at the service of Digitalization at Michelin

By Patrice HAURET, R&D Manager, Passenger Car Tires Pre-Development, Europe, Michelin

Ditigal Twin is a virtual representation of a product or service in which simulation capabilities and real-life data analytics are combined.
At Michelin, several applications are targeted:

  • the tire / vehicle virtual co-design,
  • connected offers in order to provide drivers with real-time performance information and associated services,
  • anticipated maintenance and optimization of production tools,
  • the improved predictiveness of models in order to better identify technological levers at the service of innovative products.

The presentation will exemplify this approach.

Patrice Hauret has graduated from Ecole Nationale des Ponts & Chaussées in Paris. He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Ecole Polytechnique and has been a postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology. He completed a French Academic Habilitation (HDR) and has taught Applied Mathematics at Ecole Nationale des Ponts & Chaussées.

During 10 years, Patrice Hauret has coordinated Michelin’s academic and corporate partnerships in the fields of Computational Mechanics, Image Processing and Data Analysis. He has led the group developing in-house Simulation Tools at Michelin Technology Center. He is currently managing the group prototyping Michelin tires for the European market.

His scientific contributions are mainly in the fields of Multi-Scale and Domain Decomposition Methods, two fields at the core of advanced numerical methods for High Performance & Edge Computing. For these developments, Patrice Hauret has been awarded the Ecole Polytechnique Ph.D. Award (2005) and the Felix Klein Prize from the European Mathematical Society (2016).

He is a member of several advisory boards (AMIES, Carnot SMILES, EU-MATHS-IN) committed to Open Innovation and to the economic impact of Mathematical Sciences in France and Europe. In particular, he is advocating with EU-MATHS-IN the importance of Digital Twins as a cornerstone of the Digital Transformation of European companies.
