High Performance Integrated Computational Materials Engineering

PAMSIM project: Massive parallelism in numerical simulation for mechanics
Ionel NISTOR, head of Simulation tools in mechanics, EDF

Résumé : This presentation provides an overview of the research efforts as part of a collaborative project to develop, in the framework of PIA national program, a massively parallel version of the Open-Source implicit finite elements code Code_Aster (www.code-aster.org) dedicated to numerical simulation of the behavior of structures and materials.

This work is carried out in the context of rapidly growing challenges of high-performance computing since the early 2000s and the late, compared to other areas of physics such as fluid mechanic for example, taken by the numerical simulation in implicit mechanics from the HPC point of view.

The need for the evolution of Code_Aster towards a HPC version is supported by the evolution of studies to a high increasingly level of complexity in terms of modeling, to multi-scale and multi-physics simulations, to processing uncertainties, etc. To illustrate, some simulation examples, ranging from the characterization of the behavior of materials to the one of the structure, are presented.

Bio : Ionel NISTOR started with an academic career in Romania in 1999 as lecturer in ballistic sciences at Military Technical Academy from Bucharest. Then, he obtained in 2002 the M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University Paul Sabatier of Toulouse (UPS), and Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2005 from the Polytechnic National Institute (INP) of Toulouse, France. He was appointed Professor from 2004 to 2006 at National Engineering School from Tarbes (ENIT), France, and post-doctoral fellowship at National French Institute of Petrolium (IFP) from 2006 to 2007. From 2007 to 2010, as researcher in R&D Division of Electricité de France (EDF) and Code_Aster team member he contributed in several research projects around the numerical simulation of the dynamic structure behavior. From 2011 to 2014 he managed the project devoted at EDF R&D to the development of the numerical and experimental tools for rotating machinery.  Since 2015 he is the head of Mechanical Simulation Tools group in the Advanced Mechanics Analyses department at EDF R&D.
