Digital Technology and AI: What Are the Challenges for Education, Research, and Industry?
Laurent Champaney, Directeur Général, ENSAM

Digital transformation and artificial intelligence are now at the heart of industrial change. Their widespread adoption is transforming technologies, production methods, and professions, but it also raises a crucial question: what skills are needed to support these transformations?

Initial training plays a vital role in this regard. It must enable future engineers to understand and master the technologies that are currently transforming industry: advanced simulation, artificial intelligence, digital twins, high-performance computing, and new computing architectures. It must also prepare them to work in environments where these technologies are increasingly integrated.

Research, for its part, helps advance these technologies and align them with industrial needs. Collaborations between laboratories, educational institutions, and companies make it possible, in particular, to develop new approaches to simulation, digital engineering, and digital twins, and to explore the possibilities offered by artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

But the rapid pace of these changes makes continuing education just as important. Companies and engineers must be able to update their skills, understand new technologies, and assess their potential and limitations. This synergy between initial training and continuing education is a key prerequisite for the widespread adoption of digital technology and AI in industry.
The work carried out at Arts et Métiers is part of this dynamic. Each year, the institution trains more than 6,500 students in the challenges of digital technology and business transformation, particularly through its Evolutive Learning Factories. It also draws on 15 laboratories, a doctoral school, and numerous industrial partnerships to develop approaches centered on advanced simulation, hybrid digital twins, and digital engineering.

The creation in 2025 of the “AI for Engineering” task force reflects this commitment to strengthening the links between artificial intelligence, engineering, high-performance computing, digital twins, and emerging technologies such as quantum computing. This initiative is based on an integrative, frugal, and human-centered approach, with the goal of meeting the real needs of businesses and regions.
In this context, the partnership with Teratec takes on its full significance. The synergy between initial training—provided primarily by the grandes écoles—and continuing education, which is closely aligned with technological advancements and business needs, should help accelerate the adoption of these technologies and their integration into industry.

This is how we can contribute to the development of engineering enhanced by digital technology and AI, in support of industrial competitiveness and the transformation of production systems.
