About Research and Development
Research and Development (R&D) at ArcelorMittal is a major driver for future growth and to stay at the forefront of steel industry innovation in high value-added segments. With a budget of approximately $270 million in 2013, ArcelorMittal possesses a R&D capability unique in the steel industry.

R&D is a major player in ArcelorMittal’s 3 core values - sustainability, leadership and quality -, and supports the 3 main pillars of the Group’s strategy:

  • geographical spread – by operating in all the countries where ArcelorMittal has sites,
  • product range – by working to differentiate our products from those of our competitors,
  • and value chain – by making a contribution throughout the value chain, from the raw materials to the finished product delivered to the client.

Employing 1500 researchers in 11 labs located in Europe, North and South Americas, R&D operates in 3 business fields :

  • Products and steel solutions research,
  • Process research
  • Technical assistance to the plants
ArcelorMittal and HPC

In order to improve our production process, numerical simulation becomes a key tool. As our process involve multi – physic interactions (thermal, mecanical, metalurgical) more realistic simulation in 3 dimension needs high performance computing technology.

Moreover, with the introduction of high strength steel in the market, in order to optimize their in use properties by our customers, high performance computing enables to test many configurations (right choice of process set-up, adequate geometry) that would not be feasible neither with physical test nor with classical computing tool for cost and time reasons.

As an example, ArcelorMittal is deeply involved in a starting co-labelised system@tic and I-Trans project OASIS whose objective is to optimize the addendum surface geometry in order to facilitate the stamping process of high strength steel.

Finally HPC opens the door to ab initio simulation that would help for deeply understanding material behavior under different solicitations.

ArcelorMittal and TERATEC

As problems to face are involving multidisciplinarity, it is important to have a place where exchanges between researchers, industrials and innovative companies are facilitated. ArcelorMittal intends to participate in collaborative projects by submitting challenging problems to this new community.
